Carolyn Jane Foley
Carolyn was born in Windsor, Ontario on May 26,1980. She died in Midland, Michigan on April 22, 2026, surrounded by the people who loved her.
Carolyn was the beloved wife of David Ewoldt for nearly 15 years and the loving mother of Penelope and William Ewoldt.
Carolyn was the beloved youngest child of Larry and Kathy Foley of Amherstburg, Ontario. She was a dear daughter-in-law of Don and Katie Ewoldt of Indiana.
Carolyn was the youngest sister of Nancy Romsa (Jonathan) of London, Ontario, Scott Foley of Amherstburg, Drew Foley (Jennifer) of LaSalle, Ontario and the late Peter Foley (1970).
Carolyn was a loving granddaughter of the late Ken & Lily Learmonth, Peggy Foley and the late Ken Foley. Carolyn is survived by beloved nieces and nephews, Cillian and Aevlyn Foley, Madeline and Alexander Romsa, Jacob Ewoldt and Grayson and Logan Francoeur.
Carolyn grew up in Amherstburg and attended St. Jean Baptiste Elementary School, Villanova High School, the University of Windsor where she earned a BSc Degree in Biology, and Purdue University where she earned a Master of Science Degree in Entomology.
During her time at the University of Windsor, Carolyn spent many hours sampling and studying environments around the Great Lakes. This included a week in the middle of Lake Erie on the Coastguard ship, Limnos, where she dredged samples from the lakebed.
Following graduation from Purdue, Carolyn continued to work there as an Environmental Researcher with Special Interest in the Great Lakes. Much of her work was published in journals.
Carolyn met her future husband, Dave, at a bus stop in Indiana where they were both students at Purdue University. Carolyn and Dave were married on June 11, 2011, in Indiana. They moved to Midland, Michigan and on May 6, 2013, welcomed into the world their daughter, Penelope Kathryn, and on April 10, 2015, their son, William Peter.
Carolyn was a very talented academic and athlete. As a member of the Amherstburg Chiefs Girls fastball team, Carolyn helped win the Provincial Championship in 1996. At Villanova High School, Carolyn was a member of the swim team and the track team. At the University of Windsor, Carolyn was a member of the Lancers' track and field team.
Always an adventurer, Carolyn spent time backpacking around Europe and attended the Olympics in Greece in 2004. Always wanting to help people and do the right thing, she helped to dig wells in Ecuador.
In her 45 short years, Carolyn touched many lives. She remained a very proud Canadian to the end. As a lifelong environmentalist, it was fitting that Carolyn died on Earth Day.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, in memory of Carolyn Foley, would be appreciated. This was one of Carolyn’s favourite charities for all the help they provided to her and Dave following William’s birth. https://ronaldmcdonaldhouseswo.ca/donate/donate-in-tribute-memory/
