As a wheelchair user who relies on an accessible ramp van, I am deeply discouraged that, after four years under the current council, it remains impossible to park in any of Amherstburg’s downtown public lots. Ontario’s AODA standards require at least one 3.4metre accessible space in every public parking area. Despite this clear obligation, our town continues to fall short.   

During the early years of Open Air Weekends, parking beside Caffeine’s was fully reserved for people with disabilities. Later, this was reduced to a pair of temporary signposts in cement buckets.  

In recent years, even those minimal accommodations have disappeared. And of course, the need extends beyond just “Open Air” weekends. I have made many attempts with councillors and town administration, only to receive vague assurances that “reports will be brought forward” or “reviews are underway.” 

Meanwhile, nothing changes.  

It is difficult to understand why a simple, lowcost solution — approximately $1,000 for paint and temporary signage — cannot be implemented by our town’s works department.  Two properly marked accessible spaces in each public lot (by Caffeine’s and near the book store), would finally allow residents like me to enjoy our own downtown.    

Accessibility is not a luxury. It is a legal requirement and a basic expression of community inclusion. As we enter an election year, I hope our leaders will finally recognize that meaningful accessibility is achieved through action, not promises. A few painted lines and signage would make a world of difference for many residents.  

I am asking our town to take this small but essential step so that everyone—regardless of mobility—can participate fully in Amherstburg’s downtown life.
