It is a labour of love for Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission president Tim McAllister and the team of volunteers.
The Mission served its Christmas turkey dinner at noon on Christmas Day with 105 meals served both in-person and by take-out. The meal featured turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, carrots, sweet potatoes, gravy, mac and cheese, buns and dessert.
The journey to prepare the Christmas meal began at 2 a.m., with McAllister starting the process to get the meal ready. Checking the eight, 20-pound turkeys occurred throughout the rest of the night and into the morning, until the meal was served.
While McAllister was one of those who worked in the kitchen, other volunteers assisted in decorating the dining area at the Mission for the holiday.
“The ladies made the place beautiful for the occasion. They always go over and above to make the Mission beautiful,” he said. “The community provided the food. There were special gifts for the people.”
The donations are always very appreciated, McAllister added, but they always make the job of the volunteers at the Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission a little easier.
“I'm so excited that I am able to continue helping people in need,” said McAllister.
McAllister referenced the Mission's motto “People Helping People” and that the Christmas turkey dinner was another example of that.
“My board and volunteers give 110 per cent to keep this place going,” he stated.
The energy they show helps keep him going, McAllister added.
The Amherstburg Food and Fellowship Mission also offered its gratitude to all donors, including TI Automotive, who helped sponsor the Christmas meal.
