A closing reception was held for an area artist at the Gibson Gallery and now the photography work of area students are now on display.
“Parallels: Finding Monet During War Time” by Anna Buckie was the subject of a closing reception last Sunday afternoon. Buckie said the exhibit went well with over 40 pieces of art on display.
“Most pieces are plein air art from the area,” she said.
Originally from Ukraine, Buckie said painting in the Essex County area has similarities to when she grew up in Ukraine. She said her parents are still there, in an area she said is not safe, and she frequently worries about them.
There was meaning behind the “Parallels” exhibit title.
“It means when I paint in plein air in Essex County, it takes me back to memories of growing up in Ukraine,” she said.
Buckie added her heart is in Ukraine, but painting helps her heal. The exhibit was to help bring awareness to what is happening in Ukraine. While her parents decided to stay, Buckie added a lot of older people decided to stay despite the war.
Her work is mostly oil pastel, noting the work on black paper makes the colours “pop.”
Buckie has spent 11 years in Canada, coming in 2015. Many friends and family came to the exhibit, as well as people from as far as Germany.
“It means a lot,” she said. “It’s my first solo show. I’ve had mini-shows.”
Having her first show at the Gibson Gallery was meaningful, Buckie added, as the late Hazen Price was a family friend and he was instrumental in the gallery’s history. Buckie added that her mother-in-law Valerie Buckie is a former curator of the Park House Museum.
Next up at the Gibson Gallery is “Student Pix,” which opens this Friday (May 22) and runs through May 30 when the closing reception will be held. It features work of students from the Greater Essex County District School Board.
