Four athletes at North Star High School are heading to post-secondary education with scholarships in their back pockets.

All four athletes from the Amherstburg public high school are in different sports with two staying in Canada and two heading to the United States. A special ceremony was held last Thursday morning at the school.

Emma Rudling is one of the athletes heading across the border, as her track and field skills landed her a scholarship at Wayne State University. She said she is feeling “pretty good” about the matter.

“I’m glad I can continue running in university,” said Rudling. “Their team is pretty good and they have the program I want to do.”

Rudling will study civil engineering while in university. She said she decided between Wayne State and the University of Windsor.

Max Ricciuti will head to the University of Windsor and study business. His scholarship comes from his talents on the soccer pitch.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said. “I’m pretty excited about it.”

Ricciuti said it came down to Windsor or Shepherd University, an NCAA Division 2 school in West Virginia. When looking over the situation, Ricciuti believed going to the University of Windsor suited him best.

“It’s closer,” he said. “I gelled with some of the players there.”

Peyton Meloche will be heading to the University of Michigan – Dearborn Campus next year. She received a scholarship thanks to her softball talents and will study criminal justice in her post-secondary education.

Meloche said she liked the coaches at the U of M’s Dearborn Campus and her future teammates.

“It’s a nice campus and nice community. The program is really good,” said Meloche. “I’m really excited.”

The degree is her ultimate goal but softball is something she will also try to excel in as well.

“I’m so excited. I’m not really nervous,” she added.

Ashton Fevreau was a standout on the football field for North Star and will now attempt to do so at the University of Windsor.

“I feel awesome,” he said. “It’s a dream come true.”

Fevreau said he thanked his friends, family and God for getting him to this point. He said he looked at going to the University of Windsor or St. Clair College but decided on U of W. Staying close to home and continuing his football career is important to him, noting he is eagerly awaiting training camp in August.

Fevreau added he will be studying nursing while in university.
