Jr Wolves b-ball team looks to improve

The North Star Wolves junior girls basketball team got off to a quick start in their season-opener but an early run by their opponent doomed them.

The Wolves dropped a 42-21 decision to the Essex Red Raiders last Thursday evening in Essex. The Wolves scored the first five points of the game but the Red Raiders went on a 16-0 run to pull ahead.

It was a deficit the Wolves couldn’t pull out of, though they would go on runs of their own to get back in the game at points.

Despite the outcome, Grade 10 players on the junior Wolves thought they had some brights spots against the Red Raiders.

“I feel good for the first game of the season,” said Quin Beaudoin. “We have a fairly new team.”

Hailey King, a co-captain of the team with Beaudoin, agreed they have a lot of Grade 9 players for the 2026 WECSSAA Tier 2 junior girls basketball season.

Olivia Petro, who led the Wolves with ten points against Essex, said it was a physical game but believed they came together as a team in the Sept. 24 basketball game. She added they need to work on their teamwork and communication throughout the game, while King believed they have to work on breaking the other team’s pressure.

The Wolves will be in Windsor next Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 6) for a game against the Assumption Purple Raiders. They play their first game on their home floor next Thursday (Oct. 8) in a 4 p.m. game against Walkerville. Coach Nora Newhook said they will have a chance to improve with a full week of practice.
