Local artist wins third prize in global art competition

An Amherstburg artist that competed against artists from across the world has been rewarded for his efforts.
Dennis White captured third place in the people’s choice category at Art Comp, a prestigious art competition based out of London, Ontario. White said Art Comp saw over 1,000 paintings submitted but a panel of judges pares it down to the top 100. Each artist is allowed to submit three works with White’s “Mr. Bojangles” being selected to compete.
“It’s the biggest art competition in Canada but it is opened up globally,” he said. “Anyone can enter from around the world.”
After the judges choose a top 100, the competition goes to a top 20 then a top ten before awards are zeroed in on. The first prize is $100,000 but people’s choice awards are $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000 with White capturing the latter prize.
White said it was nice to see his work rewarded. Much of his work in recent years has been music-themed.
“Anyone that enters is hopeful,” said White. “It kind of acknowledges your work. I’m grateful for the people that voted for me. It’s really nice.”
Art Comp started in June and ran for 100 days, concluding Sept. 24.
Winning third prize in the people’s choice category is a major accomplishment for White but will have to enter other competitions going forward.
“Once you win a prize, you are not allowed to enter the competition again,” said White.
White is also a member of the Local Collective Art Project, a group of local artists that regularly have exhibits at The Missing O restaurant on Murray St.
Reaction has been positive since White’s accomplishment went public.
“A lot of people have been complimenting me,” he said.
White added he is grateful to the Local Collective Art Project, the community as a whole, everyone who voted in the competition and Art Comp.
Art Comp is based out of an old Kellogg’s factory at 100 Kellogg Lane in London.
White is not the first local artist to win a prize in Art Comp. Stephen Gibb won a $20,000 peopleLocal artist wins third prize in global art competition’s choice award a few years ago and recommended that White enter this year.
