After eight years, Don McArthur is moving on to other aspects of his life.
The two-term councillor has confirmed he is not seeking a third term and will focus on other aspects of his life.
“Serving on Amherstburg council has been the honour and privilege of my life,” he said. “I’ll be forever grateful to the Town of Amherstburg. Outside of being a father, it’s been the most rewarding and fulfilling experience of my life.”
Public office is something that is borrowed from the community, he believed, adding it is time for new blood and a new face on council. By announcing now, he hopes that it encourages others to see an opportunity and try their hand at a council seat.
Running for office is an “incredible” experience win or lose, he said, but getting on council allows the ability to make decisions that will make Amherstburg a better place.
“It was excruciating,” he said of his decision. “I love being elected as a councillor for the Town of Amherstburg. I’m sad to be leaving. It’s been a huge part of my life. I’m leaving something I love but I think it’s the right decision for me now.”
Family is one of the reasons McArthur said he is stepping aside, noting his daughter has one year left in high school and he wants to spend more time with her before she goes off to university. Writing is something the former journalist wants to focus more on as well as singing, as he plays guitar and performs around the area.
McArthur said he respects all of his council colleagues and while there were disagreements, he said everyone wants to see Amherstburg do well.
As for accomplishments, McArthur noted “I didn’t accomplish anything alone” and that he was one vote of seven. He said he is proud that Amherstburg is a more livable, welcoming place to live. Improvements to parks and trails, Open Air Weekends and the development of the former Duffy’s property are things he is proud to have been part of.
“The best part is we’re only getting better all the time,” he said.
McArthur said he will still be visible in the community and he is not going anywhere.
“I’m still going to be championing this town and its residents every chance I get,” he said.
Recalling being on the campaign trail twice and knocking on a lot of doors, McArthur said that is what formed his decisions on council. He advised this year’s group of candidates to “listen more than you speak” and work hard collectively. He said there are differing viewpoints in Amherstburg, but everyone wants what is best for the town.
In addition to thanking the residents and his council colleagues, McArthur also thanked the town’s staff, whom he said has the community’s best interests at heart.
“They care about the town and provide exceptional service to residents,” he said.
McArthur concluded by stating he covered Amherstburg town council as a reporter and served on it eight years and is passionate about the community.
“No one loves this town more or the people of Amherstburg more and I hope that never changes.”
