Obituary - Peter Szabo Sr.

Peter Szabo Sr.

Peter Szabo Sr. passed away quietly in his sleep in his 101st year on June 27, 2026, while a resident of Richmond Terrace Long Term Care Facility in Amherstburg, Ontario.

Peter was born in Hungary in 1925 and immigrated with his mother in 1928 to join his father in Canada. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1944 and was assigned to convoy escort duties across the North Atlantic. Peter proudly recalled how his ship, the H.M.C.S Dunvegan, assisted in escorting the surrendering German submarine U-889 in May 1945 into port in Nova Scotia. Peter was honourably discharged in 1946, having earned the Canadian Volunteer Service medal, the War medal and the Atlantic Star for his service. Following the war, Peter was very proud of his career as a supervisor and general foreman at the Windsor Chrysler Assembly Plant for 40 years until his retirement, whereupon he travelled extensively and nurtured his large vegetable garden supplying free produce from his driveway in Harrow.

Peter shared his later years with his best friend and travelling companion Julie Hunt who helped him achieve his dream of seeing the North American continent by car including the top half of South America, plus travels to all the islands of the Caribbean as well as Bermuda and Hawaii.

He was predeceased by his sisters Mary and Helen and his son David (2023). Peter is survived by his sister Margaret Bondy, son Peter Jr. (Cathy), daughter-in-law Lynda Prouse (David), and daughter Terry McCarthy (Brian), as well as his four grand children: Jennifer, Michael, David Jr., and Shannon and his great grandchildren Jaiden, Jaycee, Zaria and Braedon.

Peter was a kidney donor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada. We would like to extend our deep appreciation and thank the staff and management at Richmond Terrace for the kind and respectful care they provided Peter.

Visitation will be held at James H. Sutton Funeral Home, 401 Sandwich Street South, Amherstburg, Ontario (519-736-2134) on July 2, 2026, from 1pm until the time of funeral service at 3pm with cremation to follow. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
