Route to OBA’s starts well for Amherstburg Cardinals U10 team

Amherstburg battled Kingsville in U10 baseball playdown action with the hometown Cardinals winning the Aug. 7 game 8-7.

The Amherstburg Cardinals U10 team hope to compete in the upcoming Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) championship and are off to a good start in that quest.

The U10 team opened their playoffs last Friday evening (Aug. 7) against the Kingsville Knights before a large crowd at Bill Wigle Park in Amherstburg. The Cardinals and Knights played a tight ballgame with Amherstburg coming out on top 8-7.

“It was not a good start for us,” said Amherstburg coach Mike Mathieson. “These kids did not give up. They kept grinding. They’ve got more heart than they know what to do with.”

Neil Mathieson and Cam DiPasquale had two hits and two RBIs apiece, with Mathieson and Jacob Fox scoring two runs apiece. Mathieson said Colton Garvey “had a tremendous game behind the plate.” 

Brock Abraham, Tyler Hindermeier and Patrick Motruk were fantastic on the mound, he added, combining to give up only four earned runs and only three walks for the game. 

The U10 Cardinals are in a six-game double-knockout playdown format, he added. Mathieson said last Friday they have to await to see who their next opponent is as it depended on how other teams did this past Monday. He hopes for another game at Wigle Park this week.

“This was a big game for us,” Mathieson said after last Friday evening’s game. “Kingsville is a very, very good team.”

Mathieson also acknowledged the large crowd at Wigle Park for the Aug. 7 baseball game.

“The people just loved it,” he said.
