Sr Wolves girls basketball loses tight game against Essex
The North Star Wolves senior girls basketball team opened the 2026 WECSSAA Tier 2 regular season last week and it didn’t go as they wanted it to.
The Wolves came out on the short end of a 32-29 decision Sept. 24 in Essex. The Red Raiders built a 19-10 halftime lead on their home floor but the Wolves clawed back in the second half. While North Star made it a close game, they couldn’t overcome the deficit they faced.
Tyler Lamarche led the way for the Wolves with nine points.
Wolves head coach Dom Silvaggio said they played in a tournament the previous weekend and made it to the finals but that tournament, along with the first regular season game, showed the same problem. That problem is missing players with the tournament being largely junior-aged players due to senior players not being able to go.
Senior-aged players have also been absent from practices and some were unable to attend the first game of the regular season last Thursday afternoon.
“It’s been a disappointing season so far in terms of commitment,” said Silvaggio.
Silvaggio said two senior players attended practice the previous Monday and that has been an issue since the school year started. That makes things hard to work on in practice and more difficult to execute in games.
In the game in Essex, the Wolves did not play well in the first half with Silvaggio taking note of the fact they only scored ten points.
“In the second half, I’ll give them credit, they came out with more intensity,” he said.
Had the Wolves converted some layups under the basket that they missed or made more of their free throws, Silvaggio believes it could have been a different result.
“I don’t think we made half of our free throws,” he said. “We need to finish underneath. Those are the things that haunt you.”
There are a lot of returning seniors, including their starters, but Silvaggio emphasized it is tough to get them ready when they are not showing up to games or practices. The talent level is there, he said, but would like to see them come out and work at improving their game.
“We need more commitment,” he said. “When we get more commitment, good things could happen. The talent is there.”
The Wolves were at Sandwich this past Tuesday (Sept. 29) and play their first home game of the regular season this Thursday (Oct. 1) against the Belle River Nobles at 4 p.m.
