Student art was on exhibit and the subject of judging in a friendly art exposition last week in McGregor.

École Sainte Ursule held its second annual student art exposition last Thursday evening where the artwork was displayed and parents, grandparents, guardians and students went around with clipboards scoring the entries.

Jessica VandenBrink, a Grade 6/7 teacher at the French Catholic elementary school, said the event stems from a club that runs regularly inside the school.

Grace Fillion and Blake Bonnevie review some art pieces.

“We ran an art club for two months,” said Vandenbrink. “This is a celebration of the end of the season and all of our art pieces.”

Criteria for the awards included most creative, most original, best floral, best natural scenes and more. Prizes were awarded to the winners last Friday during the school day.

Other elements of the April 23 art exposition were a “treasure hunt,” raffles, an art auction, and yoga, the latter taught in the gymnasium by Sara Jobin.

VandenBrink said there are 25 students in the art club at École Sainte Ursule, ranging from Grades 3-8. While the art exposition was mainly for art club members, she added other students were eligible to take part as well.

“It’s open to the whole school,” said Vandenbrink.

In all, there were 103 entries in the student art exposition.

The art club at École Sainte Ursule gives a creative outlet to students, VandenBrink stated, and it runs February through April. She said it started in the winter for a reason.

“I had the winter blues,” Vandenbrink explained. “I needed something creative to do and I thought everyone else did too.”

VandenBrink added: “It is an inclusive club that lets the kids create and express themselves using different mediums (sculpture, painting, sketch). It differs from an art class, as I wanted to focus on the joy of creating without any limitations or guidelines. The kids gave each other pointers and I was there to supervise, guide and support their artistic journeys.”
