The future of policing in Amherstburg requires public transparency

Blue logo reading Letter to The Editor above three wavy lines.

As a concerned resident, taxpayer, and former member of the Amherstburg Police Service, I am deeply troubled by the lack of public transparency surrounding the future of policing in our town.

The decision about who will police Amherstburg after 2028 is one of the most important choices this council will make. Yet, to date, there has not been a single public meeting dedicated to this issue.

When Amherstburg transitioned from its own police service to Windsor Police, public meetings were held and residents were given the opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, and be heard. That same standard should apply now.

Policing represents one of the largest budget costs borne by Amherstburg taxpayers. Residents deserve openness, clear information, and meaningful public consultation before any decision is made.

The Town has an agreement with Windsor Police until 2028. However, with Windsor indicating it will no longer provide contracted policing after that time, it is unacceptable for the mayor and administration not to meet publicly and discuss the path forward with the taxpayers.

I am also troubled that returning to a local Amherstburg police service appears to be dismissed so quickly on the basis that it would cost too much, without any public recognition that many residents may want that option fully considered.

Residents deserve to know what options are being reviewed, what resources and costs are being compared, and how any recommendation will return to Council. To date, little to no public information has been provided. Taxpayers deserve accountability, consultation, and a voice in this important decision.

Respectfully,

—Frank Cleminson
