The North Star Wolves are now 7-1 entering the final week of the regular season after picking up two more victories last week.

The Wolves hosted the Riverside Stingers last Tuesday night (Oct. 27) and won 42-28. The Wolves had a 9-4 lead after one quarter but built it up to 26-8 by halftime.

Lexi Gignac, Tyler Lamarche, June Buchner, Emily Mcguire, and Aria Pare all had eight points against Riverside.

“We played a good first half,” explained North Star coach Dom Silvaggio.

In the second half, Silvaggio said they weren’t as sharp and lacked some defensive intensity. Players got into foul trouble and that impacted their performance.

Every point mattered against the Stingers, as Silvaggio pointed out there are a cluster of teams in the WECSSAA Tier 2 standings that have between one and three losses. Playoff seedings could be based on tie-breakers such as points.

“It might come down to point differential,” he said.

Frank Palumbo, who coaches the Wolves with Silvaggio, agreed their first half defensive intensity was better than the second half. In the latter half, they “eased up a bit” against Riverside.

The Wolves are improving in their free throw shooting, fast break and layups as the season goes on.

“Their attitude is great,” said Palumbo. “It’s a great group of girls.”

Emma Hadfield believed they had a good game.

“I thought we played really well,” she said. “Defensively, we got a lot of turnovers. Offensively, we were cycling the ball really well.”

Hadfield added they are improving as the season goes on and their shooting and layups are getting better.

The Wolves travelled to Kennedy last Thursday (Oct. 29) and beat the Clippers 44-11. Mcguire had ten points while Buchner scored eight.

North Star was in Kingsville this past Tuesday night (Nov. 3) for a game against Erie Migration. They conclude the regular season at home today (Nov. 4) with a 3 p.m. game against Tecumseh Vista Academy.
