The Amherstburg Cardinals U10 Rep team earned a spot in the OBA championship Labour Day weekend thanks to an 8-5 victory over LaSalle Aug. 16 at Bill Wigle Park.

The Amherstburg Cardinals U10 Rep baseball team will be playing for a provincial title.

The Cardinals qualified for the Ontario Baseball Association’s (OBA) championship with an 8-5 win in playdown action Sunday afternoon at Bill Wigle Park. Amherstburg built an 8-2 lead heading into the seventh inning but LaSalle fought back with three runs to make things interesting. Tyler Hindermeier struck out the final batter to seal the deal.

Neil Mathieson pitched six strong innings for the Cardinals while Patrick Motruk secured the first two outs of the seventh.

“Our pitching was tremendous,” said Amherstburg head coach Mike Mathieson. “Neil went six innings. I don’t know how many strikeouts he had but he did a great job.”

Mathieson also praised Hindermeier and Motruk for closing it out in the seventh.

The Cardinals’ defense wasn’t as sharp in Sunday afternoon’s game, he added, but they hit the ball well. He believed they could have had more runs but credited LaSalle for being a strong team with good defense.

“That was just a good baseball game,” he said. “There were two good teams.”

Cortex McEldowney had two hits for the Cardinals while Neil Mathieson had two runs scored and two RBI’s and Brock Abraham had two RBI’s. Neil, Parker Anderson, Ethan Bradacs, Motruk, Cam DiPasquale, Abraham and Jacob Fox all had one hit in Sunday afternoon’s game.

Amherstburg will be heading to Midland Labour Day weekend for the OBA’s and Mathieson said they are looking forward to it, though they have games they want to win before that.

“It’s awesome,” he said of qualifying. “That was our goal from the beginning of the year.”

Mathieson said the U10 Cardinals are “ahead of schedule” and credits the work of the assistant coaches and the players themselves for continuous improvement.

“This puts them ahead of schedule and good for the (Amherstburg Minor Baseball) association,” he said. “The hard work from a lot of people is good for all of our teams.”

This was the second win of the week for the U10 Cardinals as they defeated Woodslee 17-8 last Tuesday (Aug. 11), also at Bill Wigle Park. Amherstburg scored multiple runs in every inning with the game ending in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.

Mathieson said after that game they ground out a win, noting they wanted to put pressure on Woodslee from the outset.

“This was a big win moving towards our goal of the OBA’s,” Mathieson said last Tuesday night. “They delivered. They came out swinging.”
