While they are a young team improving as the season goes on, the Amherstburg Cardinals U11 Rep team earned a highlight last Wednesday night.
The Cardinals hosted the LaSalle Turtle Club Selects U11 team Aug. 19 at Bill Wigle Park in a game played under the lights.
The Cardinals were able to pull out a 15-5 win and gain some confidence as the season moves along.
Coach Shawn Windibank said they have five players new to travel baseball this season. The team hit its stride last Wednesday night and picked up their fifth win of the 2026 baseball season.
“We needed this game overall. We’ve had a bit of a layoff,” said Windibank. “We had some rust after that.”
The U11 Amherstburg team pitched well in the night game and hit from the time the game began. They put up four runs in the first inning, four more in the third inning, one in the fourth and six more in the sixth inning when the game was called due to the mercy rule.
“The kids are playing better overall,” Windibank said after the Aug. 19 game. “It took some time for them to gel together.”
The U11 Amherstburg team hosted Lakeshore Tuesday night, after this issue of the River Town Times went to press.
They have a rematch against the LaSalle Turtle Club Selects U11 team this Thursday at 6 p.m., with this game being in LaSalle.
