The Amherstburg Firebirds U11-2 team were on the diamond last Saturday for a girls fastpitch game against Kingsville U11-1.

The visitors left town with a 9-6 win at the Malden Centre Park diamonds, but the coaches with the Amherstburg club were pleased with how the young fastpitch team is progressing.

“I thought the girls worked hard and I think they are improving every day,” said coach Carrie Sekela.

Sekela said they’ve had to deal a lot with the rain early in the 2026 season but the Firebirds are coming together.

The Firebirds operated under the Amherstburg Minor Baseball Association umbrella.

“We’re starting to get into the groove,” said Sekela. “Their improvement is remarkable since our first game.”

There are a lot of good things happening, Sekela added, and the players are talking more on the field, communicating well and working hard in games and practices.

A lot of the girls have either played hardball on co-ed teams with boys or are taking up the sport for the first time. She said they are a very coachable group of girls.

“They are very willing to learn. They are good with constructive feedback and are positive,” said Sekela.

The U11-2 team’s next game is this Thursday, July 2, in Lakeshore.
