U12 Cardinals get back on winning track under the lights

The Amherstburg Cardinals U12 Rep team played under the lights at Bill Wigle Park last Friday night. The Cardinals won the July 31 game over Tecumseh by a 11-4 final score.

The Amherstburg Cardinals U12 baseball team got back on the winning track late last week.

The Cardinals U12 rep team took on the Tecumseh Rangers U13 Selects team last Friday night under the lights at Bill Wigle Park with the home side winning 11-4. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Cardinals.

Head coach Andrew Brush said the coaches were pleased with how the Amherstburg group started the game.

“Today, for sure, we came out ready to play,” said Brush. “They all had each other’s backs.”

The Cardinals had one of their best pitchers on the mound to start the game and Brush said they had good eyes at the plate as well.

“We ran the bases well and got key hits and key times,” said Brush.

The fact it was a big game for the Cardinals helped as it gave them confidence.

Brush said it was a good experience to play under the lights in front of a large crowd of parents and supporters. When the boys have fun, Brush added they don’t put as much pressure on themselves and play the way they are capable of playing.

The overall effort during the July 31 baseball game saw Brush have nothing but positive things to say about the game. He pointed out they had a quality opponent as well.

“That team we played against played hard as well,” said Brush.

Brush said the boys are starting to put it together and are continuing to progress. They practice hard and are starting to gain more confidence and skills.

As he noted after a July 19 game against Lakeshore, Brush reiterated the Amherstburg team is young with many players learning the sport. They are playing against teams that have their players having played together for years.

“It’s only going to get better from here,” he said.

The U12 Cardinals host the Essex Yellow Jackets this Thursday (Aug. 6) at 6 p.m. at Malden Centre Park.
