U12 Cardinals win second time in last three games

Amherstburg played Essex last Thursday in U12 baseball action with Amherstburg winning 6-4. It was at Malden Centre Park.

After a rough start to the season, the Amherstburg Cardinals U12 baseball team is finding their rhythm.

The Cardinals now have won two of their last three games, including last Thursday evening (Aug. 6) at Malden Centre Park. The Cardinals took on a talented opponent and defeated the Essex Yellowjackets 6-4.

“That was a fun one,” said Amherstburg head coach Andrew Brush. “You can tell we were having fun.”Having fun made the difference as the young Cardinals team played to their capabilities and had the confidence to pull out the victory.

The Cardinals scored all six of their runs in the first inning and held off the Yellowjackets from there.

“The bats came out hot in the first inning,” said Brush. “We slowed down a bit after that. We made some nice plays in the field.”

The Cardinals’ players were more relaxed in the Essex game, he added.

“They showed up ready to play,” he added. “That was a really good team we played against. It’s a well-coached team. That was a big win for us. They are a good team to beat for us.”

The U12 Cardinals lost to the Woodslee Orioles Aug. 4 18-9 in their previous game, also at Malden Centre Park. Brush said that game was a bit of a setback, as they came out strong but didn’t play as well as the game went on.

The next game for the U12 Cardinals was another game against the Tecumseh Rangers U13 Selects, the team they beat 11-4 under the lights July 31 at Bill Wigle Park. That game was Tuesday night in Tecumseh, after this issue of the RTT went to press. 

They host the Tecumseh U13 Selects at Malden Centre Park Aug. 20 at 6 p.m.
