U9 Cardinals pick up a win over Kingsville under the lights

The Amherstburg Cardinals U9 baseball team defeated Kingsville 21-4 last Friday night at Bill Wigle Park in Amherstburg.

The Amherstburg Cardinals U9 baseball team had a chance to play under the lights last weekend and took advantage of it.

Playing before a large crowd at Bill Wigle Park last Friday night, the Cardinals knocked off Kingsville 21-4 in a game called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Troy Cox, head coach of the Amherstburg team, said the coaching staff is pleased with the Cardinals’ progress.

“We came off a really good outing in Port Elgin,” he said after the June 12 game.

The Cardinals started that recent tournament 0-3 but picked up a win against a strong team and used that to propel themselves into the finals. They didn’t win the final game, but the team was encouraged with their efforts.

“We had a good weekend in Port Elgin and finished second out of eight teams,” said Cox.

Many of the players had to travel to other centres to play until Amherstburg Minor Baseball was revived, and Cox said the young team has a lot of good athletes on it who enjoy playing baseball.
