There is an update on when a pair of intersections along County Road 9 (Howard Ave.) could be receiving signalization.

Councillor Molly Allaire shared an update on her social media platforms, stating “I want to share an update regarding the long-awaited traffic lights at Howard Avenue and Middle Side Road. According to the County of Essex, construction for the installation of these traffic signals is likely to begin in mid-April. In addition, the County has confirmed they are actively working on the design at Howard Avenue and Alma Road. That intersection is expected to receive some form of signalized traffic control later this year. These improvements are county decisions.”

Allan Botham, the director of infrastructure and planning services with the County of Essex, provided additional details about the project, stating Allaire’s post is “in line with the County’s position on the two intersection signalization projects.”

“The installation of signals at County Road 9 and County Road 10 is currently out for tender. We will receive quotations in the next couple of weeks and develop a construction schedule after that,” Botham told the River Town Times in an e-mail. “We anticipate having the work done in the early spring, depending on contractor scheduling.  The work will be completed primarily under lane restrictions; any full closures that may be required will be minimal.”

Botham confirmed the signalization of Howard Ave. and Alma St. is currently in the design phase.

“The County will retain a consultant in the next few weeks to complete an analysis of the intersection and develop an appropriate signalization strategy.  Unfortunately, it is too early in the process to identify a timeline for construction or the anticipated impacts to traffic during that construction,” Botham stated.
