Wildcats fall short to St Anne in WECSSAA baseball championship game

The St. Thomas of Villanova Wildcats went up against the St. Anne Saints in the championship game of the WECSSAA baseball tournament last Friday morning at Cullen Stadium at Mic Mac Park.

The St. Thomas of Villanova boys baseball team got to the finals in the WECSSAA baseball tournament but ran up against a strong team.

The Wildcats lost in the title game to the St. Anne Saints last Friday morning at Cullen Stadium, within Mic Mac Park in Windsor.

“Unfortunately, we just made some mistakes in the field, mistakes that cost us,” said Villanova assistant coach Jason Reaume.

St. Anne was able to take advantage with timely hitting and drove runners home when they got them on base.

“I think our pitchers pitched well,” said Reaume. “With our bats, we had some opportunities. We didn’t capitalize when we got guys on base.”

Despite the loss in the championship game, Reaume said he was happy with how Villanova played overall. After losing their first game of the tournament, the Wildcats reeled off three straight victories to get into the championship game.

The tournament got underway at Mic Mac Park last Wednesday (May 20). Villanova lost 8-7 in their first game at Cullen Stadium but bounced back with a 10-0 win over the Riverside Stingers at Soulliere Field. The tournament continued May 21 with Villanova picking up a 3-0 victory over the St. Joseph Lasers and a 6-5 win over the Holy Names Knights.

Reaume believed they are among the best teams in the league, though “we couldn’t come out on top today (May 22).”

“I’m proud of the kids for the way they played all season,” said Reaume. “Hopefully we get to continue.”

This year’s team consists of Adrian Hong, Ben Soltis, Brady Semande, Brennan Lo, Caius Cardinal, Calvin Grondin, Carsen Middleton, C.J. Brocoy, Connor McNorton, Cooper Otterman, Declan Cole, Dylan Doidge, Dylan D’Alimonte, Elijah Scharlach, Evan Harding, Hudson Baker, Jack Krause, Jaxon Laforet, Julian Tedesco, Landon Long, Mylo Wasilef, Nico Tedesco, Noah Mayer, Ryan Etzel and Simon Rocheleau.

The Wildcats had an avenue where they could continue, but it depended on St. Anne. The Saints played in SWOSSAA this past Tuesday (May 26) after this issue of the River Town Times went to press. A win by the Saints in Chatham would allow the Wildcats to challenge for the second spot in the OFSAA Regional tournament.

“We need St. Anne to win Tuesday,” said Reaume.

Should St. Thomas of Villanova get an opportunity to compete at the SWOSSAA level, that game would be Thursday in Chatham. The OFSAA Regionals are in Windsor.
