It’s been a rebuilding year for North Star Wolves senior football team last week.

The young group of Wolves hosted the St. Joseph Lasers last Friday night (Oct. 9) at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg with the Lasers leaving with a 35-0 victory. Things went against North Star right from the opening kickoff, when the Lasers returned it for a touchdown.

The penalty-filled first half saw flags fly frequently, including when what appeared to be the final play of the first quarter occurred three times due to penalties. On what was actually the final play, the Lasers’ lead grew to 14-0 on a one-yard touchdown plunge.

The St. Joseph advantage grew to 21-0 in the second quarter. Though they had a punt return touchdown called back on a penalty, they were able to get an 18-yard touchdown pass before the first half was over.

St. Joseph scored a touchdown in each of the final two quarters, including one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 44-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, to round out the scoring.

North Star head coach Emmitt Rosati acknowledged there were a lot of penalties in the game, including several on his team, but added there are a lot of mental mistakes to clean up as well. Those mistakes added up and cause the score to get out of hand late in the game.

When all 12 players on the field were on the same page and played consistently, the Wolves were able to do some good things, Rosati indicated. He thought the defense had a good game but noted they had disadvantages of having St. Joseph start drives deep in Wolves’ territory with the defense also tiring out late in the game.

Tough games remain on the Wolves’ schedule to close out the season but Rosati said they have to prepare for whomever is on the schedule. He said the coaches continue to see improvement every week from the young players. The Wolves travel to Essex this Friday (Oct. 16) for a 7 p.m. game against the Red Raiders.
