The North Star Wolves girls soccer team dropped to 0-2-1 on the 2026 WECSSAA “A/AA” girls soccer season after a pair of losses last week.

The week opened on their home pitch, with the Wolves dropping a 3-0 decision to the visiting Belle River Nobles last Tuesday afternoon at the Libro Centre.

It was not the performance they were looking for, especially in the first 40-minute half. June Buchner, who is overcoming an injury but still on hand to help the coaches, said they weren’t as intense as they should have been in the first half.

“We picked it up in the second half,” said Buchner.

Teammate Gemma Goldman agreed the Wolves were more intense and aggressive in the second half, noting they forced Belle River’s defense to run more. Goldman added they hope to find ways to score more goals going forward while Buchner said she wants to see more aggressiveness and confidence from her teammates.

Compared to the first game, a 3-3 tie with Essex April 1, there was a bit of a drop-off, they believed.

“I think we were more excited to play the (Essex) game,” said Goldman. “It was our first game of the season. I think we were more scared to play this (Belle River) game. We were more hesitant. That was lessened in the second half.”

Buchner said they will have to learn about positioning, structure and taking advantage of their opportunities

“We are excited to see what we can do in our next game,” Buchner added.

That next game was last Thursday, April 9, in Tecumseh against L’Essor. Unfortunately for the young Wolves team, they were once again unable to get a goal with L’Essor coming away with a 2-0 victory.

The final home game of the six-game regular season for North Star was this past Tuesday (April 14) against Ste. Cecile. That game, played at the Libro Centre, occurred after this issue of the River Town Times went to press.

The Wolves’ remaining two games are on the road, with a match in Leamington April 23 against the Lions and a return trip to Leamington May 4, this time to play the Cardinal Carter Cougars.

All games start at 4 p.m.
