Amherstburg Firefighters Association presenting “Fire in the Hole” cornhole tournament this Saturday
A popular event presented by the Amherstburg Firefighters Association returns this Saturday.
The fourth annual “Fire in the Hole” cornhole returns to the McGregor Columbian Club Sept. 26 starting at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit local causes and individuals that the Amherstburg Firefighters Association (AFFA) supports.
“We just like to fundraise to give back to the community and have fun doing it,” said Amherstburg Firefighters Association president Jeremy Pillon.
Causes over the years have ranged from helping The House Youth Centre, including at its annual Amherstburg’s Coldest Night of the Year, to the annual “Stuff a Fire Truck” toy drive, sponsoring youth sports, helping those in need, churches, LaSalle-Windsor Special Olympics, the Amherstburg Food & Fellowship Mission, Amherstburg Community Services (ACS), scholarships at local high schools and other ways to help support the local community.
All skill levels are welcome to this year’s “Fire in the Hole” cornhole tournament. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.
The tournament had 35 teams last year, Pillon said, adding they would like to match or surpass that this year.
“It’s all going back into the community,” said Pillon.
AFFA vice president Cameron Arksey said they thank the McGregor Columbian Club and said they are a good group to work with.
“They’ve always been very supportive of us,” said Arksey.
The “Fire in the Hole” cornhole tournament is the AFFA’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The event has raised about $50,000 thus far through the first three years and heading into year four.
A committee has been set up this year to help run the tournament, Arksey added.
Arksey said they support as many causes as they can. He said people support the tournament as well, noting they have great cash prizes of $1,000 for the first place team, $500 for second place and $300 for third place.
Sponsors have stepped up again this year, and Arksey added the AFFA is grateful to have them.
