Amherstburg resident celebrates 100th birthday

June Buchanan receives a special certificate from Mayor Michael Prue last Friday for her 100th birthday.

An Amherstburg resident met a long line of friends, family and well-wishers last week as she hit a milestone birthday.

June Buchanan, a resident of Seasons Amherstburg, had a party thrown in her honour last Friday afternoon in recognition of her 100th birthday. Her actual birthday was this past Monday (May 4).

“I haven’t got used to it yet,” said Buchanan, “but I’m enjoying every bit of it.”

Buchanan was born in Windsor in 1926 and she has lived in places such as Michigan and Chicago before moving to Amherstburg. She has raised four children and assisted in bringing up others. She counts many people as her grandchildren, stating “I have adopted grandchildren or grandchildren have adopted me.”

“It’s made me have a large family,” she said.

Fox was married twice, once for ten years and the second time for 15 years.

Love and her faith were cited as keys to her longevity.

One of the things people know Fox for is her love of crafts and crafting. She has had her crafts featured in many shows around the region over the years and she still enjoys her hobby when she is able.

Fox was grateful to not just her family and friends, but also to the staff at Seasons Amherstburg and her church family as well.

Mayor Michael Prue was one of the well-wishers that came out for Fox’s birthday party. He said he has known Fox for several years, including having gone to garage sales Fox used to have before she moved into Seasons.

Prue said he also has seen Fox when both attended functions by the Amherstburg Freedom Museum.

“I am so happy to be here,” said Prue. “She has lived a long and full life.”Prue noted that when he meets people who live that long, common themes as to why are that they are happy and live with purpose. He said the celebration “couldn’t happen to a nicer person.”

“We all love you very much,” said Prue.
