The St. John the Baptist Catholic Women’s League (CWL) served some tea, wore their fascinators and raised money for the community in the process.

The Olde English High Tea was held last Saturday (May 30) at the Columbus Community Hall in Amherstburg. Roughly 120 ladies bought tickets to attend this year’s fundraiser, said local CWL president Karen McGuire.

“It’s our main fundraiser for the year,” said McGuire. “It’s our tenth year.”

The afternoon included sandwiches, desserts, a silent auction, a photo booth, a hat contest and a time of bonding for the women in attendance.

“I think it is nice to see the ladies come out and enjoy each other’s company,” said McGuire. “Some of them don’t get to see each other a lot so they are able to meet here. It’s such a joy to share our friendship, faith and community.”

McGuire added it is great to see friends reconnect and spend the day having fun.

“Proceeds go back into the community at the end of the year,” said McGuire. “We direct our funds back into the community.”

Any and all proceeds the St. John the Baptist CWL collects goes to local charities and causes, McGuire added, including supporting the church itself to outside organizations that help the town.

“It’s not the same causes every year,” McGuire explained. “It’s always someone different. We try to keep it local.”

Sandwiches, desserts and treats are supplied by the ladies in the local CWL, she added, and that long-time members or newcomers were all welcomed.

Planning for the annual event starts in January, she added.
