“Chimera” exhibit ongoing at The Gibson Gallery

Amherstburg artists Klaus Salucop, Matthew Zaidan and Dylan White have their work featured as part of the “Chimera” exhibit at The Gibson Gallery. They also collaborated on a piece for the show.

The current exhibit at the Gibson Gallery features the artwork of three Amherstburg artists.

“Chimera” features the work of Klaus Salucop, Dylan White and Matthew Zaidan with an opening reception being held last Saturday night. The name “Chimera” depicts a mythological Greek creature combining a lion, goat and snake. 

The three local artists combined on a collaborative piece, with another part of the exhibit seeing the artists trying to put their own style on the same piece of work. 

Salucop said it is to show three heads and three different styles bringing their own perspectives into one.

“We’ve been talking about doing it for about a year-and-a-half,” said Zaidan.

After discussing it and sharing concerns that artists may not have enough pieces for solo exhibits of their own, they combined. They all have different styles and that is reflected as part of the exhibit.

Early discussions started at a reception last year for a Gibson Gallery exhibit by Dennis White, Dylan’s father, and started brainstorming ideas and themes. Once they arrived on “Chimera,” they started working towards it early in 2026.

Zaidan said he dedicated his participation in the “Chimera” exhibit to his friend Marika, who recently passed away. He said she would have enjoyed the show and she was in his thoughts when he was creating his own art.

“I feel very honoured to share this exhibit with Matt and Klaus,” said White. “They have styles very different from my own.”

White pointed out they are all part of the Local Collective Art project and he enjoyed the fact they joined for an exhibit at The Gibson Gallery. He said they “celebrate each other’s accomplishments” and they are all connected by art.

“Everything is in sets of threes,” Zaidan added of the exhibit. 

White continued by saying being part of the collective sees people of different styles coming together, something he believes makes each of them better artists. 

As part of the “Chimera” exhibit, the three artists took turns doing their own take on specific pieces.

The two exhibits that follow “Chimera” also feature work of artists in the Local Collective Art project. “Chimera” runs through Aug. 16 with “The Zen Freakshow” by Jay Raven coming to the gallery Aug. 17-Sept. 6. After that “On the Wall, Off the Wall” by artists Stephen Gibb and Rob MacLellan will be at the Gibson Gallery Sept. 10-27.

The Gibson Gallery is also presenting the 59^th annual Art by the River, which will be held at Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada Aug. 29-30.

The Gibson Gallery is located at 140 Richmond St. in Amherstburg. It is open daily during the summer from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
