Grade 9’s get look around North Star High School at orientation day

Incoming Grade 9 students at high schools around the area are getting used to their new surroundings, including at North Star High School.
The Amherstburg public high school held its Grade 9 orientation day last Tuesday morning (Sept. 1) where the new students were welcomed in the gymnasium, given a tour of the school by peer mentors, guided to their classes, learned how to open their lockers and met their teachers and enjoyed games and activities to cap off the morning.
Principal Kyle Berard personally greeted as many students as he could and told the entire group of Grade 9s that they are now part of the Wolfpack, in reference to the school’s nickname.
There are “great benefits” to being in the Wolfpack, Berard told the Grade 9 class, but there are responsibilities as well.
“You also have the responsibility to give back to the community,” said Berard.
Berard told the students that they will be getting an enriching experience now that they have entered high school.
“You are going to be stunned at the number of things offered in this building,” Berard predicted.
New vice principal Jana LePage was also introduced to the students and said her early impressions of North Star was that it is a great school.
Leora Sharman and Sophie Rivait led the team of student mentors, with Sharman recalling her own Grade 9 orientation. Sharman said she never imagined she would be addressing a future group of Grade 9 students but developed the confidence and abilities to believe in herself and had the support of others while doing so. She encouraged the Class of 2030 to get involved in the school.
Rivait added the new students should take the opportunity to develop new friendships and meet new people. She urged the Grade 9 students to “get out of your comfort zone” and try new things.
“North Star is a second home to me,” said Rivait.
