A Harrow church is holding weekly barbecues this month as not only a way to raise a couple of bucks, but to bring the community together.
Harrow United Church (HUC) is holding Friday evening barbecues from 5:30-7 p.m. during the month of July. Barry Mannell, a volunteer with the church, said they received suggestions to bring the weekly barbecues back. It is the first time since 2018 that the church has held the event.
For $10, people get a hot dog or hamburger, drink, chips and ice cream sandwich.
Mannell said proceeds go back into the church but while they hope to cover costs and make a few bucks out of the deal, the focus is more about getting parishioners and members of the community together.
“It’s more of a social activity,” he said.
Last Friday was supposed to be outside in the parking lot but the forecast of rain moved it inside. Future barbecues will be held outdoors, weather permitting.
HUC is also maintaining an annual tradition by partnering with the Mennonite Church in Harrow. In July, the Mennonite congregation will come to HUC for combined Sunday services while the roles reverse in August with members of the HUC congregation going there.
Harrow United Church is also hosting “Parenting Through Grief: Understanding Developmental Stages and Strategies to Support Children & Teens.” Due to the recent tragedy in Harrow where a local family was found deceased, a mental health educator and bereavement therapist will be at the church to advise parents on how to support their children through loss. It is being presented in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association. More information on that session can be found by e-mailing mhp@cmha-wecb.on.ca or by calling 519-255-7440 ext. 234.
Harrow United Church is located at 45 Munger Ave. East.
