Heritage committee gets update on storm damage at Belle Vue

Old, weathered house with peeling white paint and two chimneys under an overcast sky, framed by green trees.
Belle Vue Manor's roof was heavily damaged during the storm on July 9th.

The storm that blew through the region July 3 caused damage in a variety of places, including at the historic Belle Vue property in Amherstburg.

The town’s heritage committee received an update on the matter July 9.

Heritage planner Adam Coates told the committee he didn’t have a lot of information, but shared the news that he had. Coates said he attended the Dalhousie St. property the day after the storm.

“I met our director of development there in the morning and we assessed the situation,” said Coates. “We had a lot of people coming by asking questions and trying to take pictures. The building is beloved in the town as well as people who like to see when things go sideways.”

Coates said the wind caught the copper roof and peeled off a portion of the front half of the roof. Cedar shakes were in “good shape,” he said, adding he took photos at the site.

“Administration did had a drone go up and assess it, at least from that standpoint,” said Coates.

Contractors were on-site securing the building to prevent water damage, at least on a temporary capacity, Coates told the committee.

“Administration is working through this,” he said. “Myself, as the heritage planner, I took a look more from what damage is there and trying to help assessing that at least from a heritage standpoint.”

Coates said he was there for a few hours.

“Administration did get security on-site and security is there every night,” Coates added. “Security is there every night so the building is being watched and secure.”

Committee member Stephanie Thomson said Belle Vue “is very dear to my heart” and thanked Coates for his efforts in looking after the building.
