Local developer-philanthropist mourned

An area developer and philanthropist is being mourned after his sudden passing.

Michael Dunn, who helped develop the Kingsbridge subdivision in Amherstburg, passed away after falling overboard off his boat Sept. 5 near Grosse Point Shores, Michigan. 

According to ClickOnDetroit.com, WDIV TV’s website, “a 74-year-old man was reported missing after he slipped from the bow of a yacht Sept. 5 as he and a woman were pulling up the anchor, investigators previously said. The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search on Monday (Sept. 7).”

A body was recovered Sept. 8 and was later identified as Dunn.

Dunn also had a humanitarian side, as he had for several years sponsored a holiday food drive in Amherstburg. That was a drive-thru food drive where motorists came to the Amherstburg Community Hub and had their vehicles filled with a full meal by Dunn, his family and volunteers.

“It’s such a blessing when everyone works together as a community,” Dunn said during the 2023 food giveaway. “It’s heartwarming to be able to give back. I’m part of the community and it’s important to me and my family to give back. It’s nice to be part of the community. My family and I are blessed to be able to give back.”

Dunn also stated at that time that “it’s a privilege to contribute to the festive spirit and witness the warmth of togetherness during the holiday season.”

As part of his giveaways, Dunn also made donations to Amherstburg Community Services (ACS).

The holiday food giveaway was later shifted to Amherstburg town hall.
