Malden Ladies two-pitch wrapping up successful season

The Malden Ladies two-pitch league is coming to an end for this season and its executive is pleased with how it went.

The league’s best-of-three finals started last Wednesday evening at Malden Centre Park, two days after it was supposed to due to a rain-out. Games this season typically took place Monday evenings but game nights expanded to include Wednesday evenings in the playoffs.

“We had eight teams this year,” said league president Danielle Smith, also a player in the championship series. “We’re hoping to grow further.”

A girls youth league in Harrow is a place where the Malden Ladies league hopes to attract players from once they age out of that league.

“We’re hoping more come here so we can expand,” said Smith.

While there is a competitive aspect to the league, the basis for it is to just let women come out and have a good time.

“It’s all in fun,” said Smith. “You get to play with family and friends.”

There were approximately 120 players in the Malden Ladies two-pitch league this season, with Smith stating numbers were slow coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic but are now getting back to normal. 

There were six teams coming out of the pandemic and now there are eight.

“It was a process,” she said.

There were 14 regular season games and then playoffs. League vice president Jen Purdie added it is a great league not just for those who regularly play softball, but for those who haven’t played for a while or are completely new to the sport.

“It’s a great start if you want to learn the game later in life,” said Purdie.

“It’s a great league to learn in,” added Michelle Sutton, who is the board secretary. 

Tiffany Durham is also on the board, serving as treasurer.
