A fire in a McGregor subdivision has been deemed accidental and caused about $30,000 damage.

Amherstburg fire chief Michael Mio said fire crews responded to a reported fire at approximately 6:30 p.m. May 12 in the basement of a residential home on the 7000 block of Eagle Crescent.

Mio said damage was confined to the basement area but the home sustained smoke damage.

One resident was checked at the fire scene, Mio indicated.

According to Mio, smoke alarms alerted the resident.

The fire chief is issuing a reminder to all residents to ensure smoke alarms and CO detectors are installed on all levels of the home and tested on a regular basis.
