National Youth Remembrance Contest winner honored at the Legion

A Remembrance Day video an Amherstburg student made keeps winning awards.

The two-minute video made by Anderdon Public School student Gwen Beaudoin was originally entered as part of a local contest last year through Royal Canadian Legion Fort Malden Br. 157. 

Since winning at the local level, she has won provincially and now, nationally, with the latter award being presented last Thursday night. The win came in the intermediate video category.

Beaudoin and members of her family were at the Amherstburg Legion Sept. 17 where Beaudoin received her award from Legion Br. 157 1^st vice president Annette Knight.

Knight also presented Beaudoin with a similar award to be presented to her school as part of the Legion’s general meeting.

Beaudoin pointed out her video is about her relatives John Charles Cockerham and his son Lester Cockerham. 

John was a World War I veteran while Lester fought in World War II.

“It was nice to be able to make a video about family members who were in the war,” said Beaudoin. “I’m glad I got to make a video about them.”

While pleased her video did so well and captured first place in the national competition, it is not the first time she entered competitions through the Legion. 

Beaudoin has won prizes locally in the poster and poetry competition in the past and now that she is in Grade 7, she got to try making a video.

Beaudoin added she has been entering in the poster and poem categories of the Legion Remembrance contests since she was in Grade 3.
