Amherstburg resident Christa MacLellan has released “EmpowerHer” in an effort to empower young women. she is hosting a special evening for girls ages 7-12 at Rivertown Dance Academy Nov. 22 starting at 6 p.m.

A new book has been released trying to empower young women.

Amherstburg creator Christa MacLellan has released “EmpowerHer: The Cool Girl Confidence Coloring Book,” which she says is a colouring and activity book created for girls ages 8-12.

“I’ve been hosting events called ‘EmpowerHer’ for the last couple of years,” she explained.

Noting she has nieces, MacLellan said she tries to create fun parties for them and their friends which will also build their confidence, self-esteem and self-worth. The events contain movement, creative activities and conversations that “encourage connection and self-expression.”

The new colouring book is “designed to give girls space to create, reflect and express themselves, EmpowerHer combines colouring pages with guided writing prompts and confidence building activities. The pages invite girls towrite a letter to their future selves, identify a habit they want topractise, create a personal manifesto and celebrate the qualities thatmake them who they are.”

MacLellan said the writing content of the book came together well but the illustrations took about two months to figure out. She based them on illustrators she liked and combined some of the themes from other creators to create images for the book.

Using online tools to create images, MacLellan indicated they are based on her favourite fashion and children’s illustrators. Her own illustrations were also uploaded into the online tools.MacLellan said the book includes reminders such as “I am enough, just as I am,” along with activities that encourage creativity, courage, kindness, curiosity and “big dream energy.”The book, which is available through Amazon, will be the subject of an “EmpowerHer” evening Nov. 22 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Rivertown Dance Academy in Amherstburg. That will be for girls from ages 7-12 and feature yoga, dancing, creative activities and friendship including activities inspired by the new book.

Registration is $29 per girl. Paper and markers will be provided, she added, and bringing a copy of the book is optional.

MacLellan said families can request registration details by e-mailing christajeanmac@gmail.com. Space is limited to 30 participants.
