North Star High School welcomed not only alumni from its brief history recently but also graduates of General Amherst High School and Western Secondary School as well.
The Amherstburg public high school held its first-ever “Alumni Night” where graduates, including those from the now-former high schools, were allowed to come in, enjoy food prepared by the school’s culinary department and get tours of the current school.
Principal Kyle Berard said they want to re-connect with the community, establish partnerships and let people in the Amherstburg area know the high school is ready and willing to work with them.
“We’re reaching out into the community,” said Berard. “We want to re-establish connections in the community. We’ve had a number of people come through.”
With the belief North Star is “more than a school,” Berard said they are a community school that offers opportunities for the students and town.
Roughly 100 students offered the tours, prepared the food and helped organize and run the “Alumni Night.”
“The young people will be leaders in the community of Amherstburg or in any other community,” he said.
The “Alumni Night” was also an opportunity for the general public to simply learn more about North Star High School and its programs.
“We want everyone to see what a great place this is,” said Berard.
Tasha Cannaday came with family members to the “Alumni Night” in order to get a better look at the school. Her son Caiden is in Grade 5, but Cannaday pointed out he will be attending North Star High School in a few years.
“We’re new to the area. We wanted to see the high school,” said Cannaday. “We had just heard really good things and wanted to see it in-person.”
Cannaday added they liked what they saw and was impressed by how engaged the current students were when it came to showing visitors around the Simcoe St. building.
