District 6400 Governor Kim Spirou was in Amherstburg last Wednesday night where she met with the Rotary Club of Amherstburg. Spirou also received a tin lantern as part of her visit, something that has become a local Rotary tradition that started under the late Hazen Price when he was a member of the Rotary Club of Amherstburg.

A special guest made an appearance at the most recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Amherstburg.

Kim Spirou, governor of Rotary Super District 6400, was the guest of honour at a dinner meeting last Wednesday evening at Riccardo’s Italian Restaurant in Amherstburg.

Dan Monk, president of the Rotary Club of Amherstburg, said the local club was excited to welcome Spirou to the meeting. The District Governor tries to visit every member club in the district each year.

“The Rotary Club of Amherstburg and I were excited to host District Governor Kim Spirou in our community on September 9 as she shared her message about being a difference maker,” said Monk. “This year, our District Governor challenges us to make a difference by supporting Rotary projects such as adding community pollinator gardens, fundraising to end polio, and continuing initiatives like our public defibrillator program fundraiser. We look forward to working toward these goals, and many others, for our community.”

In a post to her Facebook page, Spirou called it “a memorable official visit to the Rotary Club of Amherstburg!”

“President Dan Monk is doing an incredible job leading this club for the second year in a row, and it shows,” wrote Spirou. “Amherstburg Rotary has an amazing comeback story, growing in numbers and energy over the past couple of years under his leadership.”

Spirou said the evening included Monk sharing local accomplishments such as scholarships awarded, a Greenway cleanup keeping their community green, a vegetable booth at Farm Fest, their Mid-Summer Dinner fundraiser bringing members and community together, and an AED project that could help save lives right in their own community.

The Rotary’s AED project is attempting to place AED’s in several parks within the Town of Amherstburg.

“This is a club truly living out service above self,” she stated, in reference to the Rotary motto.

Spirou added: “I also received a beautiful gift of a hand crafted lantern which I absolutely love because it reminds me of Rotarian Hazen Price who was a Rotary mentor to so many of us!”

“Amherstburg Rotary, your comeback story is inspiring, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!” she said.

Spirou, a member of the Rotary Club of Tecumseh-Lakeshore, became District 6400 Governor in July at the 73rd annual “Meet the Governor” dinner in Harrow.

“Action is always the answer,” she said that night. “Not analysis, not apathy – action.”

When people strive to make an impact, Spirou added the cumulative impact is breathtaking.

“We are 1.2 million difference-makers in the world,” she told the crowd in July.

Spirou said she will launch Difference Maker Awards during her term as district governor. She is also planning “The Great Pollinator Challenge” in order to increase the amount of pollinator gardens. She also want a large “Rotary Epic Day of Service” where every club in the district performs a community project on the same day.
