Skills competition a highlight of Cardinals’ tournament

One thing for certain, the Amherstburg Cardinals certainly have some fast runners.

Two of them received medals as part of an exciting skills competition as part of a baseball tournament last weekend at Malden Centre Park. The skills competition was a highlight and it was held last Saturday afternoon.

At the U7 and U9 Cardinals Classic Select Baseball Tournament, Xavier Desjardins was second when he ran the bases in a very exciting competition which saw three players from each team do their very best to beat the clock.

While he was making his U9 teammates proud, on another diamond it was all smiles for Amherstburg’s Hayden Bradt who was third overall in the U7 race to  beat the clock.

It was a busy couple of days out at Malden Park and although the Cardinals did not win the championship, they can boast that they had the best hitter.

Players from participating teams were part of the skills competition last Saturday at Malden Centre Park. The Amherstburg Cardinals hosted the U7 and U9 Classic.

Amherstburg slugger Anderson Davies had some very tough competition but he stepped up to the plate and won the U9 hitting competition. Hitting from baseballs coming out of the pitching machine, the players connected and were awarded points for the distance.

Besides running the bases in a timed race, and hitting for distance, the third part of the skills competition test accuracy in a throwing contest.

There were a total of four teams in the U7 division and once the dust had settled down and the weather passed by, LaSalle’s Turtle Club were the overall champs with a win over Forest Glade. Amherstburg had a good showing and were consolation finalists against Lakeshore.

In the U9 division, there were a total of six teams, and in the end it was the Riverside Rangers beating Forest Glade for the trophy. 

The Cardinals started out 2-0 in the opening round but came up just a little short as they were eliminated in the semi-finals.
