Small earthquake in Amherstburg on New Year’s Day

Those hearing a rumble or those who felt a brief shake on New Year’s Day can attribute that to an earthquake that saw its epicentre in Amherstburg.


Earthquakes Canada confirms that an earthquake did, in fact, occur in Amherstburg with its epicentre just in the area of Malden Centre.


The earthquake was recorded at 11:19 a.m. and was originally listed as a magnitude 2.0 MwN. That has since been revised and is now recorded by Earthquakes Canada as a 2.2 MwN quake.


The earthquake was listed by the agency as having been “lightly felt in Amherstburg, ON.” Reaction varied on social media varied, with some stating they felt and/or heard it, to those stating they didn’t hear anything.


As of press time, the Earthquakes Canada website had 189 reports of people who heard or felt it.
