The recent St. Clair College “Alumni of Distinction” awards had some Amherstburg representation recently.
Chuck Kelly, currently the president and CEO with Movati Athletics, was presented the award earlier this month at a banquet at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts in Windsor. He is a 1991 graduate of the Ambulance and Emergency Care program at the college.
In addition to Kelly, other award recipients were Sheri Lynn Koscielski, a 1986 graduate of the Business Common program. She is now a senior mentor with FIRST Robotics Windsor-Essex.
Walter LaPlante, a 2009 Mechanical Engineering Technology – Mechatronics graduate, was recognized as well. LaPlante is the control and industrial connectivity supervisor with Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan.
Dino Miceli, a 1992 graduate in the Mold Maker program, is president and owner of Calibur Tool and Mold.
Class of 1994 graduate Paula Reaume-Zimmer studied nursing and is currently the president and CEO of Bluewater Health, based in Sarnia.
Adelina Sisti-DeBlasis graduated from the Class of 2011 in the Culinary Management program. She is a Red Seal Endorsed chef and culinary teacher with the Greater Essex County District School Board.
Kelly recalled his graduation in 1991 and noted a lot has changed in the world since then. His early career was as a paramedic within Windsor-Essex County.
“I worked as a paramedic for 16 years,” he said.
As a partner in the fitness industry, they started opening gyms including what was then known at Total Fitness. That has evolved into Movati Athletic, which now has locations across Canada including several in Alberta and Ontario.
Kelly said he wasn’t expecting a call from St. Clair College and originally thought it was a sales call when he was first contacted. He said he doesn’t care for notoriety and is proud of the people at the businesses they run. He said everything is a team effort.
“It takes everyone,” he said. “Everyone has a different role on the team.”
Noting his wife Angela encouraged him in accepting the award, he said she has been a key person in his life and gave her a lot of the credit.
“I’ve been a success but only because I have a strong family unit, anchored by my wife,” said Kelly. “That has allowed me to be out-of-town for work. She takes care of the family and the house.”
Calling the award “a team of distinction,” he said staff and Movati both past and present have had a hand in the success of the business. He said some are still there and others are gone but “they still helped contribute.”
