Terry Fox Run at North Star High School raises over $1k

The Terry Fox Run at North Star High School reached its goal this year.
The Amherstburg public high school held its annual Terry Fox Run Sept. 29 with junior grades (Grade 9 and 10) heading out for laps of the school property in the rear of the building with the senior grades (Grade 11 and 12) getting out of class and participating later in the afternoon.
Prior to heading outside, students gathered in the school’s main gymnasium to watch a video on Terry Fox and his 1980 “Marathon of Hope” when he tried to run across Canada to raise money in the fight against cancer. He started in Newfoundland but stopped in Thunder Bay when his cancer came back.
Remembered as part of the event was Stephen Scott, a teacher who died of cancer. His son Evan, a current student at North Star, read his dad’s story to both groups of students including his dad’s diagnosis, trips to Toronto for treatment but still making his sons’ sporting events and activities, and his battle with the disease in the latter part of his life.

Evan praised his father’s strength and resilience during the assemblies. Stephen Scott passed away July 26, 2025.
“Cancer took his life but not his legacy,” said Evan.
Mikki Balestrini, one of the teachers that helped organize the Terry Fox Run, said the school established a $1,300 goal and were able to reach it. She noted the school was part of the recent “Fox Fest” at Sandwich Secondary School that featured Terry’s brother Fred, and that event helped rally all public high schools.

Top classes received a pizza party, with classes taught by Stef Heber and Nikki Baltzer raising $375 and $126 respectively.
Balestrini thanked all teachers who helped out. There was also a raffle with prizes for lucky students.
