An opening reception was held last Saturday afternoon at The Missing O for the Local Collective Art Project’s “The Art of Flight” exhibit. Proceeds from the sale of art benefits the HBMO.

A new exhibit by The Local Collective Art Project has a charitable twist.

“The Art of Flight” officially opened Oct. 24 at The Missing O and is a avian-themed exhibit involving 15 local artists. Lisa Bassett, Trevor Cox, Bonnie Deslippe, Stephanie Doucet, Stephen Gibb, Andrea Niven, Rob MacLellan, Dennis White, Dylan White, Marshall White, Jay Raven, Klaus Salucop, Megan Ware, Matthew Zaidan and Rocco DiPasquale have their original art and prints in the back room of the Murray St. restaurant.

Doucet said the collective is a community of artists that create work and showcase it. She said they appreciate The Missing O for allowing them the space to exhibit their art.

When the decision to create a bird exhibit was made, they “were delighted to partner” with the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory (HBMO).

“All of the artists agreed to give 25 per cent from the sales of their original art and prints to the HBMO,” said Doucet.

Hugh Kent, president of the HBMO, said their prime season is the fall and that the conservation area and its hawk tower are on a prime migration pathway. There are daily recordings by bird watchers and Kent said they have been part of a record-breaking year thus far as approximately 200,000 birds have been documented.

Volunteers with the HBMO have been bird watching at Holiday Beach for 52 years.

“We’re truly standing on the shoulders of giants,” said Kent.

Kent encouraged people to come to the hawk tower if they want to experience the phenomena  that happens overhead. He said the HBMO takes a specific focus on hawks.

“Hawks are at the top of the food chain,” he said. “If there is a problem with hawks, there are problems somewhere else.”

The HBMO is part of roughly 150 similar organizations in North America and South America monitoring hawks and the health of the environment.

“The Art of Flight” runs through Nov. 15.
