The Windsor Police Service states it is investigating a serious motor vehicle collision involving an ambulance that left three people injured in Amherstburg.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Dec. 9, police say officers responded to a report of a collision at the intersection of Alma St. and Concession 5 North. Officers arrived to find an SUV and ambulance in a roadside ditch, with the SUV overturned.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged, police say.

A preliminary investigation indicates the SUV was allegedly travelling southbound on Concession 5 North at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the stop sign at Alma St. Police add the SUV subsequently collided with an ambulance travelling westbound.

According to police, two paramedics and the driver of the SUV sustained non-life threatening injuries. A third paramedic was also injured later while removing medical equipment from the damaged ambulance.

The 50-year-old driver of the SUV faces a charge of careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.
