Town council to get report on possible camera costs

The issue of vandalism in parks within Amherstburg was brought to town council with the next council to get a report on possible solutions.
Councillor Peter Courtney noted the town has experienced vandalism at various sites, including several parks, that resulted in “substantial repair and replacement costs.” Courtney noted that possible installation of security cameras has been identified as “a viable strategy” to mitigate the property damage and enhance public safety.
Courtney wanted administration to investigate the feasibility and costs of security cameras and costs in parks and bring a report to the new council. That would include capital expenditures, procurement, installation and long-term costs as well as technical specifications such as camera technology, options, data storage requirements and privacy.
Courtney noted that Councillor Molly Allaire brought up the matter of vandalism at a September meeting. He said pictures were sent to council members of graffiti and “burnouts” on playground equipment.
“The damages are extraordinary and expensive,” said Courtney.
Staff Sgt. Jeff Taylor from the Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detachment attended the Sept. 28 meeting with Courtney stating council was told it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the town to look into cameras.
“It seems like a no-brainer to just arm the next council with the costs associated with this and the pros and cons,” said Courtney.
Town council approved the motion unanimously.
