Town criers come to town - and so does rain - on Heritage Weekend

A town crier competition was held as part of “Heritage Weekend” July 31-Aug. 2 in downtown Amherstburg.

Open Air Weekends will be continuing throughout the rest of the month with themed weekends, with last weekend being Heritage Weekend.

While rain washed out Sunday’s activities in the downtown core, Friday night and Saturday featured a number of different events including a town crier competition with four criers from around Ontario, including Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Bracebridge and the Toronto area coming in. 

They joined current Amherstburg town crier Norm Ross and retired town crier Frank Gorham at the competition. Gorham was the town crier from 1984-2018.

Judges included Mayor Michael Prue, Deputy Mayor Chris Gibb and Councillor Linden Crain.

Farm Fest is planned for this weekend (Aug. 7-9) with the town’s tourism department planning interactive agricultural activities, live animals, a Garth Brooks Tribute Band, a pie contest, and family-friendly fun.

Cycle the Burg will be held the weekend of Aug. 14-16. That weekend will be led by the Windsor-Essex Bike Community (WEBC). There will be opportunities to explore Amherstburg on two wheels with cycling-themed demonstrations and activities throughout Amherstburg.

Barrels and Brass is coming Aug. 21-23. The Marsh Historical Collection is leading a weekend that will feature live music, cultural experiences, and storytelling inspired by the community’s Prohibition era.

Latin Fest is planned for Aug. 28-30. The town’s tourism department said people will be able to enjoy the “sights, sounds, and flavours of Latin culture with vibrant dance performances, live music, and cultural demonstrations that bring energy and excitement to the downtown core.”
