U10 Cardinals pick up two wins on the diamond last week

Youth baseball game: runner slides into base as an infielder reaches up; other players watch on the dirt field, Bowman on jersey.
The Amherstburg Cardinals U10 baseball team picked up a win over Lakeshore June 18 at Malden Centre Park.

The Amherstburg U10 Cardinals went 2-0 last week, defeating the Essex Yellowjackets and the Lakeshore Whitecaps in two outstanding baseball games.

The Cardinals won 7-4 on a cold and windy night in downtown Essex last Tuesday, June 16. Outstanding pitching performances were given by Patrick Motruk and Cortez McEldowney, who combined to stifle a potent Essex offense. The Cardinals showed great discipline at the plate, earning eight walks. Along with seven hits, the Cardinals managed to scratch out the runs they needed, paced by Neil Mathieson and Ethan Bradacs with two runs scored each.

Two days later, the Cardinals played their home opener against Lakeshore in front of a capacity crowd at Malden Centre. This was a fantastic game, as both teams went back and forth on the scoreboard. Colton Garvey led the Cardinals with three hits and three RBIs, while Parker Anderson had two hits and three runs scored. Garvey, Bradacs and Mathieson were solid on the mound, and great defense was played by Theo Boivin and Jacob Fox. The game was tied at 11 in the bottom of the seventh when Cam DiPasquale led off with a walk, and he promptly stole second. Patrick Motruk then stepped to the plate and sent the Cardinal faithful into a frenzy with a rocket over the head of the Lakeshore centre fielder. The RBI double scored DiPasquale and won the game in a walk-off for the hometown Cardinals.

The AMBA would like to thank the people of Amherstburg for coming out to support our teams. Early in the season, we have had outstanding crowds at our games.
