Wildcat girls break through and win WECSSAA title vs. Holy Names

It was a win the Villanova Wildcats senior girls soccer team waited a few years to get.

The Wildcats finally broke through against their rivals, the Holy Names Knights, and captured the WECSSAA “AAA” championship last Wednesday evening at St. Clair College. 

The Wildcats did something few teams were able to do against the Knights – score goals – and got them from Mackenzie Doll and Isabelle Sakalo and won 2-1. 

Anna Pozzi scored the Holy Names goal late in the second half.

“We tried to get the ball forward,” explained Sakalo. “We really wanted to win this together.”

“It was four years coming,” added Doll. 

Doll said she is in Grade 12 and has been with the Wildcats’ team all four years of high school, and this was the year they were finally able to beat them.

“I personally wanted it so badly,” she said. 

Doll credited her teammates for helping to get the job done.

“We worked our butts off,” she said.

Villanova worked hard and accomplished their goal, she added, and said getting the first goal of the match was a big key into their winning the game and the championship.

“I thought the first goal helped us to keep going,” she said. 

Doll added she was proud of the way the Wildcats came together and said they would be ready for the SWOSSAA “AAA” girls soccer championship.

Sadie Balazs said she was given the chance to show her abilities and expressed her thanks to the coaching staff for allowing her to do just. 

Balazs was one of those assigned to keep Pozzi in check and with the help of her teammates and strong communication, they were able to do it.

“I’m very excited,” she said, of the chance to move onto SWOSSAA.
