The St. Thomas of Villanova Wildcats boys baseball are entering this week’s WECSSAA baseball playoff tournament in good shape.

The Wildcats picked up a convincing 11-1 victory over the visiting Riverside Stingers last Thursday afternoon in what was their final regular season game. The win gave Villanova a 6-1-1 record on the WECSSAA Cullen/Soulliere Division season, tied atop the division with the St. Anne Saints.

The win was meaningful for the Wildcats as both themselves and the Stingers had 5-1-1 records heading into the afternoon contest at Villanova. The win over Riverside was the second consecutive win for the Wildcats, as they travelled to Leamington last Monday (May 11) and defeated the Cardinal Carter Cougars by a 7-5 final score.

The Wildcats finished the WECSSAA regular season with a 6-1-1 record.

“I thought we played really well,” said assistant coach Jason Reaume. “Our pitchers were able to have good command of the strike zone.”

Reaume also pointed out the hitters were able to get on top of Riverside right away and the Wildcats’ defense played well in the field and got them out of some jams.

“Overall where we’re at in the season, we’re where we want to be,” said Reaume.

The Villanova boys baseball team has been improving as the season has gone along and they are trending in the right direction, he indicated.

The Wildcats have a young team this season, Reaume said, as they have about five Grade 12 players but a lot of Grade 9 and 10 players. He added they have been placed into bigger roles than the Wildcats would normally do when they have more senior-aged players.

Reaume said it was roughly the fifth straight year that the Wildcats finished the regular season atop the WECSSAA regular season standings.

The WECSSAA baseball playoff tournament is this Tuesday and Wednesday.
