The North Star Wolves are riding a four-game winning streak in WECSSAA Tier 2 senior girls basketball play and are looking to build on it this week.

The Wolves defeated the visiting Belle River Nobles last Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 14) by a final score of 50-25. The win made the Wolves 4-1 heading into this week’s WECSSAA regular season action.

North Star led 25-12 at the end of the first half and 37-14 after three quarters en route to the victory.

Wolves head coach Dom Silvaggio believed the team played good defense against the Nobles. It’s been a trait for the last few games.

“We’re playing well,” said Silvaggio. “Our defense is playing pretty well.”

Issues that had hurt the Wolves earlier in the season, including missing players in practices and games, are slowly improving. Silvaggio said having more players in practice allows the team to work on more aspects of their game.

The Wolves have a tough schedule coming up, with the next three of their games against stronger opponents. That included a game at Brennan this past Tuesday night (Oct. 20), after this issue of the River Town Times went to press. North Star then returns home for a 3 p.m. game against Tecumseh Vista Academy this Thursday (Oct. 22) and then host Riverside Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m.

North Star is battling with Brennan, Riverside and Tecumseh Vista Academy for the top positions in WECSSAA Tier 2.

“Two of the games are at home, which is good,” said Silvaggio.

The Wolves have also benefitted from the return of star player June Buchner, who missed last season and the start of this season recovering from knee surgery.

“That makes a huge difference,” said Silvaggio, adding they are trying to manage her minutes on the floor to ensure she gets back in game shape.

Buchner, who scored 12 points in the win over Belle River, said she is not 100 per cent but working her way towards that. Her defense is not where she wants it to be just yet, she added, but she is trying to create offense and control the pace of the game.

“I’m making up for my lack of defense,” she said.

Buchner added “I’m feeling good to be back” and said she can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings.

Ashley Mongeau scored 13 points against the Vortex while Lexi Gignac added eight.
